Design duo Craig & Karl transform a forgotten petrol station into a beautiful space

Intro

Petrol stations are usually not the most beautiful structures to look at, especially in London where a lot of the population doesn’t even own a car, but design duo Craig & Karl have revived this former petrol stop in west London’s White City to create a beautiful visual display for the public.

Step: 1

Wood Lane in White City sits between the Television Centre – BBC’s former headquarters – and White City Place, the former BBC Media Village. Both media hotspots reopen this year after extensive redevelopment.Using this as inspiration, Craig and Karl have adapted bright and playful colours of a television test card, and often used in the branding of major petrol companies, to transform the derelict station into a public art installation named Here After. The title suggests a heaven or utopia, with the designers explaining, “now that the petrol station has fulfilled its duty, so to speak, it’s free to enjoy itself”.

Step: 2

Here After is the first stage of revival for the station, which plans to be used as a venue for pop-up events. White City is undergoing an £8 billion decade-long regeneration aimed to create a “thriving, creative neighbourhood”. This will be spent on the construction of new shops, restaurants and educational facilities alongside 4,000 new homes, more office space and a projected 20,000 new jobs.

Step: 3

The striking visuals are the international design studio’s first major public artwork in London. Craig & Karl is the design duo of Craig Redman and Karl Maier, who collaborate daily from New York and London to create mass-scale, colourful installations, such as the 14,000 square foot candy carpet in China.
